OCWA runs four independent water systems and one of them is here. Alongside OCWA itself the authority lists Cardiff Tookes Spring, East Side Spring and the Skyridge Community Water District, and its source table gives the town of Manlius as Lake Ontario or Skyridge wells, the only municipality in this metro whose listed source includes wells at all. Groundwater carries a different mineral, iron and manganese load than lake water, so staining, scaling and sediment behave differently on a Skyridge street than they do three miles away, and advice borrowed from a neighbor on lake water does not transfer. Lead is not the Manlius problem. The state records 1,470 lines under Village of Manlius with no confirmed lead at all and 51 galvanized, and 8,332 under the town with two lead and 82 galvanized. What the town does have is a 1972 median build year across 14,524 homes, the age at which original water heaters, shutoff valves and hose bibs all arrive at the end of their lives within the same few years. One symptom worth naming before it gets misread: white flakes that look like powdered soap in aerators and shower heads are usually the plastic dip tube inside a mid 1990s water heater breaking up, and have nothing to do with the supply.

American Community Survey 2020 to 2024 five year estimates give the town of Manlius a median year of construction of 1972 across 14,524 housing units, with 1,630, or 11.2 percent, built in 1939 or earlier and 8,966, or 61.7 percent, before 1980. The Village of Manlius, with 2,070 units, has a median of 1968 and 10.5 percent pre 1940. The New York State Lead Service Line Inventory records 1,470 lines under Village of Manlius with 51 galvanized requiring replacement, no confirmed lead lines and 1,131 unknown, and 8,332 under Town of Manlius with 82 galvanized requiring replacement and 2 lead.

In Onondaga County it lists Camillus town, Marcellus town and Skaneateles town as Otisco Lake; Cicero, Clay, Salina and Van Buren towns as Otisco or Lake Ontario; DeWitt and Geddes towns as Otisco, Lake Ontario or Skaneateles; Manlius town as Lake Ontario or Skyridge wells; and among the villages Fayetteville and Manlius as Lake Ontario, Camillus, Marcellus and Solvay as Otisco, and East Syracuse, Liverpool, Minoa and North Syracuse as Otisco or Lake Ontario. Baldwinsville and the City of Syracuse are marked as emergency connections only. In 2024 Otisco Lake supplied 47.2 percent of OCWA's water, Lake Ontario 49.5 percent and Skaneateles Lake 3.2 percent.

OCWA states that white particles in the water that look like powdered soap are often the plastic filler tube inside certain water heaters breaking down into granules, that this is most likely with water heaters manufactured between 1993 and 1996, and that the manufacturers report the problem solved, with affordable and easy to install replacements available.
